Processes of Tees

There are two different processes for making tees, including Hydro-forming and Hot-forming.

Hydro-forming
The hydro-forming of the tee is a forming process that makes the metal liquid expand from the branch pipe by the shaft compensation of the metal material. The process is using special hydraulic press to inject the liquid into the pipe blank of which diameter is equal to that of the pipe. Through the two horizontal cylinders on each side of the hydraulic press, synchronize the movement of the pipe and the volume of the pipe becomes smaller after pressing. The pressure of the liquid in the pipe blank is increasing as the volume of the pipe is becoming smaller. When the pressure is great enough to make the tee branch pipe expand, the metal material flows out of the branch pipe along the mold cavity under the dual effects of the side cylinder and the liquid pressure of the pipe blank. The tee hydro-forming process can be one-step forming, thus it can make the production efficiency high.

For the hydro-forming process of seamless tee requires facilities of larger tonnage,  currently, the domestic factories mainly manufacture tees whose standard thicknesses are thinner than DN400. The suitable forming materials of tees are low carbon steel, low alloy steel and stainless steel including some nonferrous metal materials such as copper, aluminum and titanium, etc which have relatively little tendency of cold-work hardening.

Hot-forming
The tee hot-forming is pressing the pipe blank which has the larger diameter than that of the tee until it has nearly the same diameter with the tee, and then boring a hole in which the the branch pipe is drawn; put the pipe blank into the forming die after it is heated and install a stamping die with the pipe blank to draw the branch pipe; the die is compressed in the radial direction and the metal flows in the direction of the branch pipe during the radial compression, forming a branch pipe under the drawing of the die. The whole process is formed by the radial compression of the pipe and the drawing process of the branch pipe. Unlike the hydro-forming tee, the metal of the hot-forming tee is compensated by the radial movement of the pipe, so it is also called the radial compensation process.

As using heated stamping tee, the material forming facilities' tonnage is reduced. Hot-forming tees have good material adaptability, suitable for low carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel materials. Tees of large diameters and wall thickness usually adopt this forming process.
